Remel™ BactiDrop Acridine Orange

Catalog number: R21502
Detect microorganisms from clinical specimens and blood cultures using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ BactiDrop™ Acridine Orange fluorescent stain. Kronvall and Myhre demonstrated that acridine orange stain detected microorganisms in direct smears1 and when buffered at a low pH produced differential staining of bacteria. It was evaluated for the detection of microorganisms in blood cultures2 and was found to be a rapid, inexpensive alternative to blind subcultures and more sensitive than Gram stains. Subsequent studies showed acridine orange stain to be more sensitive than the Gram stain3.

Use BactiDrop™ Acridine Orange fluorescent stain to detect microorganisms from clinical specimens and blood culture.Acridine orange detects Trichomonas vaginalis in genital tract specimens4, Neisseria gonorrhoeae in cervical and urethral smears5, Helicobacter pylori in gastric biopsies6, and enumerates mycoplasmas in broth culture7.Easy-to-interpret:Background - Black, yellow, or pale greenLeukocytes - Pale apple-greenErthrocytes - Non-fluorescentBacteria and Yeast - Bright red-orangeInclusion Leukocytes - Apple-green, yellow, orange, or redThe fluorochrome acridine orange is a dye that binds to nucleic acids of bacteria and other cells, either in the native or the denatured state. The low pH (4.0) of the buffer solution results in orange staining of bacteria and fungi, and a green to yellow staining of human epithelial and inflammatory cells and background debris observed under a fluorescent microscope. Not all products are available for sale in all territories.
