Unlocking Neuroscience with Electron Microscopy

Structural biology techniques, especially electron microscopy (EM), have been crucial in understanding neuronal activities at the molecular level. EM provides insights from high-resolution molecular structures to ultrastructural details in neuronal cells.

Our neuroscience eBook highlights key publications and workflows demonstrating how these technologies impact understanding neurological diseases, including neurodegeneration, pain, neurological cancers, and inflammation.

Discover how EM addresses fundamental biological questions related to ion channels, neurotransmission, and sensory receptors, and explore advancements in method development.

Smart EPU Software collection methods for challenging cryo-EM samples

Amira Software for advanced visualization and analysis of Cryo-ET images

Amira Software for advanced visualization and analysis of Cryo-ET images

Cryo-electron tomography creates high-resolution 3D images of biological samples. Samples are rapidly frozen and imaged with an electron microscope at different angles, producing 2D images. These need processing to extract quantitative data.

Thermo Scientific Amira Software uses AI for advanced image processing, segmentation, quantification, and reporting, providing insights to advance your discoveries.

In this webinar, learn to:

  • Visualize the endomembrane system and its spatial arrangement within a tomogram.
  • Measure the network of filaments in cellular processes.
  • Accelerate image segmentation with AI tools.

Small molecule drug discovery and the importance of cryo-EM

Structure-based drug design (SBDD) involves determining the 3D structure of ligand-protein complexes to optimize small molecule ligands.

Medicinal and computational chemists, along with structural biologists, use X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM to enhance drug-target interactions and improve ADME profiles.

Cryo-EM has become the gold standard for membrane proteins and multi-protein complexes, enabling high-throughput SBDD. Schrödinger's drug discovery programs leverage their in-house Glacios 2 cryo-TEM, as discussed by Zack Johnson, Director of Cryo-EM.

This technology accelerates their drug discovery efforts by integrating experimental structures with computational platforms.
