What is automated discrete analysis?

Automated discrete analysis is a technique that utilizes colorimetric and enzymatic measurements of several analytes simultaneously from a single sample through photometric analysis. Optional modules for some discrete analyzers can also conduct electrochemical analysis for pH and conductivity, or bitterness in finished beer through fully automated sample preparation and photometric detection. Each individual reaction cell is isolated and temperature is stabilized, enabling highly controlled reaction conditions. Discrete analyzers usually consist of dispensing probes, an incubator, a mixer and a photometry unit.

Typical Automated Discrete Analysis Workflow

Typical Automated Discrete Analysis Workflow

After the reagents and samples are prepared, they are loaded onto the instrument and the probes dispense fixed amounts of reagents and samples into the individual cuvettes. Next, the individual cuvettes are loaded into the incubation chamber, then mixed, and finally undergo photometric detection depending on the absorbance of specific wavelengths of light. These data are then interpreted through integrated computers and software platforms.

Other traditional automated techniques, such as continuous flow analysis, segmented flow analysis, and flow injection analysis, are not particularly flexible since dedicated modules are needed for specific chemistries and they typically can run only up to six tests simultaneously with at least two dedicated skilled technicians to monitor the run. Automated discrete analysis is much more flexible, performing many different reactions within a single instrument while simultaneous analyzing multiple analytes and requiring only one technician. Automated discrete analysis is used to analyze a wide range of applications including food and beverage analysis, environmental testing, and industrial quality control.
